First State Level Manipur Amateur Muaythai tournament was organized in 1999. It was organized from December 18 to 19, 1999 at the SAI Boxing Stadium, Khuman Lampak Sports Complex, Imphal. The tournament was organized by Manipur Amateur Muaythai Association (MAMTA) with the sanction of the Muaythai Federation of India (MFI).
Minister for Power, K Gobindas was the Chief Guest. He lauded the Organizing Committee for staging the first-ever Manipur Muaythai Championship at Imphal. He urged the leaders of Manipur Muaythai leaders to organize more such Muaythai tournaments in the State so that they would be able to produce good players who would be able to play in any National and International Muaythai Tournaments.
President of MFI Manipur Unit, Dr. Ksh Kala Singh also spoke on the occasion.
S Brajagopal Sharma, Ex-Minister, was the Chief Guest at the Closing Function on December 19, 1999.
General Secretary, MAMTA, O Manglemjao gave a brief account of Muaythai in Manipur and further narrated as to how they had been running the Association with the guidance of parent body, Muaythai Federation of India (MFI).
He said Muaythai, in Manipur, was a new Martial Arts originating from Thailand and further predicted that it would become one of the most popular combat sports in the near future. He also thanked MFI President, Oken Jeet Sandham for his all-out support to the leaders of MFI Manipur Unit.
